Many subscribers of state-owned Arasu Cable TV Corporation in the district are complaining of cable operators charging them as much as Rs 700 for installing the free set-top boxes (STBs) issued by the corporation. The operators are threatening to disconnect the service if they don't pay up, the subscribers told TOI.
Authorities had announced that the boxes will be installed from September 1, when digital broadcasting system was launched. "The cable operator in the area asked us to pay Rs 700 for installing the STBs of Arasu TV. He said that if we do not pay by the first week of October, he will disconnect the service," K Parvathi, a resident of Parappalayam, said.
S Sundarapandian of Aam Aadmi Party said, "Cable operators have allegedly been providing about 50% of cable connections unaccounted. They keep the collection money from those subscribers. Some of the operators have asked the residents to buy STBs provided by a private company run by their federation, instead of the ones issued by Arasu cable."
