TTN Tamil Oli (Tamil Television Network) was launched on Pongal day in 2001, where the first Tamil TV-channel in Europe, TRT Tamil Oli, was renamed and relaunched as TTN Tamil Oli. Since the launc, the channel was an important channel during the time where civil war was going on in Sri Lanka between the Sri Lankan Government forces and the Tamil freedom fighters, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
National TV of Tamil Eelam by LTTE was also transmitted through TTN Tamil Oli at that time. In 2007 the channel was forced to close down satellite transmission due to pressure from the Sri Lankan Government on French Authorities. The channel never managed to come back, and instead Tharisanam TV from Australia was bought to Europe to cover Eelam related news and programmes for Tamils in Europe. Tharisanam TV also experienced several pressure, and was relaunched as Thendral TV and later GTV (Global Tamil Vision).
For some years ago TTN Tamil Oli was launched again, as Tamoul Television Network from France, as an IPTV channel - and was available on Chitram IPTV boxes. The channel has new presenters, new programme line-up, new logo etc. - and was webcasting from the old studios of Tamil Television Network on Rue Emile Zola in La Courneuve in Paris. Due to some problems the channel stopped transmission, moved away from their TTN building and is now going to relaunch from a new studio soon.
Some live test transmissions of the channel can also be viewed through their facebook page: www.facebook.com/tvttn.tv/. With the relaunch of TTN Tamil Oli, there will again be a Tamil TV-channel transmitting from France again. Currently major players in Tamil media field in Europe is IBC Tamil TV and Athavan TV from UK. Global Tamil Vision (GTV) still exists in Europe as an IPTV channel on Saalai IPTV and Chitram IPTV.
