Action movie channels hunt for growth
India is seeing a flurry of launches in the action movie genre ahead of digitisation as broadcasters are keen to tap into a niche segment with a particular eye for subscription revenues.
National and regional media conglomerates like UTV, Sun TV Network and Star India either have entered or have plans to foray into the genre.
UTV Action, which airs Hollywood action movies dubbed in Hindi, launched its Telugu feed to dig into the Southern market as it has an affinity for action cinema. Star India has said it plans to launch two action movie channels (English and Hindi). The Hindi channel is expected to have the dubbed content along with Hindi action movies.
New Tamil channel
In a state where television news broadcasters often tend to serve as the media extension of political parties and personalities, Puthiya Thalaimurai (Tamil for new generation) is a bit of an oddball. The Tamil channel went on air six months ago, promising its viewers impartial news coverage
Soirees from south
The show about a married woman who wanted to give her salary to her mother's family glued people on to their television sets in the South. The script for the soap could have been regressive, but the appeal was pan India. The same story was retold in Kannada, Bengali and Hindi. The serial in question, Tamil hit soap Kolangal. Following suit was Thirumathi Selvam, another Tamil soap which mutated into Hindi as Pavithra Rishta.
Tamil Ozhi is emerging from Paris
A light of Tamil Ozhi is emerging from Paris, - TTN Tamil Ozhi has launched as a web-TV channel on www.ttn.tv. Currently test-transmission is webcasted on their live TV-player on their website. TTN Tamil Ozhi was launched on Pongal day 2001, where it replaced the first Tamil TV-station in Europe, TRT Tamil Ozhi. It was running very successfull until 2007 where it was forced to cease broadcasting due to pressure from Sri Lankan government against media run by Eelam Tamils.
Colors devices strategy to fight weekend battle sans movies
Colors, the flagship Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) from the Viacom18 stable, which is lagging behind Sony Entertainment Television (Set) in the numbers battle, is now strengthening its weekend programming to add more eyeballs and attract more viewers to the channel.
The channel is launching two new shows on 25 February, and will be airing special 'mahaepisodes' of fiction shows during weekend primetime.
