Plea in apex court to cancel Kalaignar TV licence
An application has been filed in the Supreme Court in the "2G spectrum allocation case" for a direction to the Centre to cancel the licence granted to the Chennai-based Kalaignar Television network.
Lawyer Mr S. Muthuraj of the AIADMK Legal wing has filed this application in the pending petition filed by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation, in which the court is monitoring the investigation by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate.
The petitioner contended that since the TV channel owned by the family of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, was promoted with funds from the tainted money of 2G spectrum scam, court should restrain the channel from telecasting any programme forthwith.

In profit, Raj TV plans 3 new channels; 2 Kannada, 1 Malayalam
Thanks to growth in viewership for its Tamil GE (general entertainment) channel, Raj TV, and effective cost-cutting measures taken by it, Raj Television Network Ltd managed to post net profit in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2010-11.
The company posted a net profit of Rs 1.41 crore for the quarter under consideration. However, for the full year 2010-11, the company registered a loss of Rs 9.56 crore, compared with Rs 15.77 crore in the previous year.

TV channels storm arena in Kerala
It is the smallest broadcast market in southern India, but thanks to its politically charged environment, Kerala is all set to see an upsurge in TV news space over the next six months.
At least eight new players have announced their intent to launch 24x7 news channels in the state; two are expected to go on air in the next one month while others are waiting for government approval.
Kerala, at present, has four exclusive news channels and at least four more news-cum-entertainment channels. Among the two players set to enter the market in the next few weeks are Reporter TV, led by M V Nikesh Kumar, who is reportedly backed by sundry investors; and a channel by the Mathrubhumi group that publishes several leading magazines and a daily by the same name.
Global satellite TV operators eyeing Indian DTH market
With growing subscriber-base, improved revenue and reduction in subscriber-acquisition costs, a slew of global satellite television operators are now eye eying a slice of the Indian DTH sector. These include DirectTV and Dish Network (from US), Bell TV (Canada), BSAT (Japan), Tricolour TV (Russia) and Foxtel (Australia) among others that are looking for a foothold in the fast-growing Indian DTH firms, two persons familiar with the matter said.

Mahesh Kumar joins Sun Direct as CEO
R Mahesh Kumar has joined Kalanithi Maran's direct-to-home (DTH) company Sun Direct as CEO.
Kumar replaces Tony D'Silva, who, as reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, has been elevated to the post of Sun Group chief executive officer and will be responsible for all businesses including television, print, FM radio, cable TV, satellite channel distribution and aviation.
